EVERY ARCHITECT YEARNS TO CREATE HIS OR HER OWN RESIDENSE

House   "It's like writing your very own story, then living in it," says Tom Workman, who with his artist wife, Jane Ann, did just that. But like true artisans, they ignored the art police and let their imaginations and humor flow with every stroke of the drafting pencil, from the true patina of the roof color to curved plaster walls and sharply arched, oriental-inspired windows. The result brings to mind a Japanese saying for the unique situation Tom and Jane Ann Workman have encountered: the lone standing nail will be hammered. Hammered and verbally pounded. The Workman home at the prominent corner of Armstrong Avenue and Preston Road in Highland park has been called many things: the Mushroom, the Smurf House, Hansel & Gretel's Cottage, the Hobbit Home.
Originally, the Workmans toyed with the notion of an English-style thatched roof, but the neighbors called a meeting and put a stop to it. The rumors get better with every drive down Preston, says Tom. One neighbor is said to have even offered to buy the home straight up and (Continue)
